What you can do with a tone generator
- Push water out of a speaker — the 165 Hz preset makes the speaker cone vibrate hard. For a guided 20-second clean use the speaker cleaner.
- Test speakers and headphones — sweep from low to high and listen for rattles, buzzing or silent ranges.
- Check your hearing range — most adults stop hearing somewhere between 14 and 17 kHz.
- Tune instruments — 440 Hz is the standard A4 note.
Waveforms
Sine is a pure, clean tone. Square and saw sound buzzy because they contain many harmonics — useful for finding rattles. Triangle sits in between.
Safety
Start at low volume. High frequencies can sound quiet but still tire your ears, and very loud bass tones can damage small speakers if played for minutes. Keep sessions short.
FAQ
Why can't I hear 18 kHz or 20 kHz?
Most adults lose the top of the hearing range with age, and many phone speakers can't reproduce it either.
Why is there no sound on iPhone?
Turn off Silent mode with the switch on the side and raise the volume.
What frequency removes water from a speaker?
Low tones around 150–170 Hz work best. Our 165 Hz preset and the speaker cleaner use this.
